The Gateway to Finnish Lapland

Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland and the official hometown of Santa Claus. Sitting directly on the Arctic Circle at 66.5 degrees north, it is the most accessible glass igloo destination in Finland - Rovaniemi Airport has direct connections from over 35 cities across 17 countries, with new routes added every year.

The area has more glass igloo hotels than any other region in Finland - from Santa's Igloos and Glass Resort literally inside Santa Claus Village, to design hotels like Arctic TreeHouse, to wilderness resorts 15-100km outside the city with darker skies and better aurora conditions.

The tourism boom is real. Rovaniemi recorded 1.2 million overnight visitors in 2023, nearly ten times the local population of 63,000. The city is now being compared to Barcelona and Amsterdam in terms of overtourism pressure. During Christmas week, Santa Claus Village queues stretch for hours and activities book out months in advance.

This does not make Rovaniemi a bad destination, it makes smart planning essential. Understanding when to stay in Rovaniemi, when to choose a nearby alternative, and what to book far in advance is the difference between a magical trip and a frustrating one.

The Real Picture - What Travellers Say

⚠️ What You Need to Know About Christmas in Rovaniemi

December 20 to January 3 is extraordinary, but it comes with real trade-offs. Santa Claus Village receives over 600,000 visitors per year with the bulk arriving in December. Recent TripAdvisor reviews describe 3-hour queues to see Santa on December 25, fully booked activities that need reserving 6-12 months in advance, and accommodation prices that are nearly double the rest of winter.

One visitor from China wrote: "Coming to the Christmas Village to take a photo with Santa was supposed to be meaningful, but ended up spending most of the day waiting in line. Missed the last bus back to the city and had to take a 30-euro taxi for less than 6 kilometres."

This is not a reason to avoid Rovaniemi at Christmas, it is magical for families with young children and for the full festive atmosphere. But manage your expectations: book every activity months ahead, arrive early for Santa visits (before 10am), and budget extra time and money for everything.

The Smart Alternative: Stay Nearby, Day-Trip to Rovaniemi

Several of the best glass igloo hotels in this region are 15-50km outside Rovaniemi - and this is actually the better option for most aurora-focused travellers. Apukka Resort (8km), Arctic SnowHotel in Sinetta (25km), Arctic Fox Igloos in Ranua (80km) and others offer:

Better aurora conditions - less light pollution than the city. Lower prices - typically 20-30% cheaper than in-city properties for same quality. Availability - easier to book even a few months out. And Rovaniemi's attractions - Santa Claus Village, Arktikum museum, husky safaris - are all an easy day trip or shuttle away.

Stay IN Rovaniemi / Santa Village if...

  • You have young children who need to meet Santa
  • The Christmas atmosphere is the main priority
  • You do not have a rental car
  • You want to walk to restaurants and activities
  • Budget is not the primary concern
  • You are visiting in October, November or March

Rovaniemi Glass Igloo Questions

Yes, but with realistic expectations. Rovaniemi is magical and has the widest range of glass igloo hotels and activities in Finland. The Santa Claus Village experience is genuinely special, especially for families. The challenge is that December is extremely crowded and expensive. For the best combination of value, availability and aurora viewing, October, November, February and March are significantly better than December - same snow, same aurora potential, a fraction of the crowds.
For aurora viewing, staying 10-30km outside Rovaniemi is better. City light pollution noticeably reduces aurora visibility from in-city properties. Apukka Resort (8km away on the Arctic Circle riverbank) and Arctic SnowHotel in Sinetta (25km) both offer darker skies and are 20-40% cheaper than equivalent in-city options. Rovaniemi attractions remain easy day trips. If Santa Claus Village is the priority and aurora is secondary, stay in the village.
Christmas week (Dec 20 - Jan 3): 6-12 months ahead. Most popular properties sell out for these dates before the previous summer. January and February: 3-4 months ahead. September, October, March: 1-2 months usually sufficient, sometimes last-minute available. Activities (especially husky safaris and Santa visits) book out even faster than accommodation in December.
Apukka Resort offers the best combination of location (8km from city, on the Arctic Circle riverbank), facilities and aurora conditions for properties near Rovaniemi. Arctic SnowHotel in Sinetta (25km out) has excellent dark sky conditions. For pure design and luxury within the city area: Glass Resort and Arctic TreeHouse Hotel are the most architecturally impressive.
Yes and this is the classic Rovaniemi itinerary. Visit Santa Claus Village by day (ideally arriving before 10am to avoid queues), watch Northern Lights from your igloo at night. Book a private Santa appointment to avoid public queues (from 500 euros). Aurora alarm services at most hotels will wake you when the lights appear without needing to wait outside.
Rovaniemi is good for aurora but not the best. At 66.5N it is on the southern edge of the auroral oval, and city light pollution reduces visibility for in-city properties. Saariselka at 68-69N has statistically better aurora frequency and much darker skies. If aurora viewing is your primary goal, Saariselka is the better choice. If you want Santa, family activities and easy access combined with reasonable aurora viewing: Rovaniemi is right.
