This does not make Rovaniemi a bad destination, it makes smart planning essential. Understanding when to stay in Rovaniemi, when to choose a nearby alternative, and what to book far in advance is the difference between a magical trip and a frustrating one.
December 20 to January 3 is extraordinary, but it comes with real trade-offs. Santa Claus Village receives over 600,000 visitors per year with the bulk arriving in December. Recent TripAdvisor reviews describe 3-hour queues to see Santa on December 25, fully booked activities that need reserving 6-12 months in advance, and accommodation prices that are nearly double the rest of winter.
One visitor from China wrote: "Coming to the Christmas Village to take a photo with Santa was supposed to be meaningful, but ended up spending most of the day waiting in line. Missed the last bus back to the city and had to take a 30-euro taxi for less than 6 kilometres."
This is not a reason to avoid Rovaniemi at Christmas, it is magical for families with young children and for the full festive atmosphere. But manage your expectations: book every activity months ahead, arrive early for Santa visits (before 10am), and budget extra time and money for everything.

Santa Claus Village sits directly on the Arctic Circle line, you can cross it on foot. The village is open 365 days a year. In December, meeting Santa requires booking a private appointment (from 500 euros) months in advance to avoid the 3-hour public queue.
Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) has direct connections from 35+ cities across 17 countries, more than Kittila or Ivalo combined. 10 minutes from the city centre.
Rovaniemi is above the Arctic Circle but at the southern edge of the aurora oval. Light pollution from the city reduces visibility. For best aurora: stay 10-30km outside the city or choose Levi, Ylläs or Saariselka (68-69N) for maximum frequency.
