Ski and Aurora in the Same Trip

Levi is Finland's most popular ski resort - 43 slopes, 230km of cross-country trails, and a lively village with restaurants and nightlife. What most ski resorts cannot offer: lying in a heated glass igloo 10km from the slopes watching the Northern Lights dance overhead at midnight.

The ski and Northern Lights seasons overlap almost perfectly from late September to April. In December and January, darkness falls before 2pm - giving you 18+ hours of potential aurora viewing per day. The ski slopes are floodlit until 8pm, so you ski in the dark, then head to your igloo for the real show.

Compared to Saariselka or Rovaniemi, Levi offers more to do beyond the igloo. The ski resort infrastructure means better restaurants, more activity options, and more flexibility for groups and families with mixed interests. Not everyone on a Lapland trip wants to spend three days aurora hunting - Levi gives the others something world-class to do.

Glass igloo hotels here range from hillside fell-top locations with 270 degree Arctic sky views (Golden Crown Levin Iglut at 340m above sea level) to lakeside wilderness cabins and forest dome properties. The variety is wider than most regions in Finland.

Golden Crown Levin Iglut - The Fell-Top Advantage

At 340 metres above sea level on the slopes of Utsuvaara fell, Golden Crown's 27 glass igloos sit above the valley light pollution with unobstructed 270 degree views of the Arctic sky. Named one of the "original luxury glass igloos in Lapland", the resort is 10km from Levi village - far enough for dark skies, close enough for easy ski access. Restaurant Utsu on site is consistently rated one of the best dining experiences in the Levi area.

The resort reopens 1 September 2026 for the new season. This is one of the most booked-out properties in Finnish Lapland for December and January - if those dates interest you, book immediately.

Levi Glass Igloo Facts

⛷️

Finland's Biggest Ski Resort

Levi has 43 slopes, 26 lifts and 230km of cross-country trails. It hosted the Alpine Ski World Cup and is Finland's most visited ski resort. Floodlit slopes mean skiing until 8pm even in the darkest months.

🏔️

Fell-Top Aurora Advantage

Several Levi igloo hotels sit on elevated fell slopes 200-340m above sea level. This height gets you above valley mist and light pollution for significantly better aurora viewing than flat-terrain properties.

✈️

Closest Major Airport

Kittila Airport (KTT) is just 15km from Levi village - the closest major airport to any Finnish glass igloo cluster. Direct seasonal flights from London, Amsterdam and other European cities in winter.

🦌

Reindeer Farm Igloos

Golden Crown Levin Iglut sits on an active reindeer farm - you may wake up to reindeer grazing outside your glass roof in the morning. A uniquely Lapland experience not found at other igloo resorts.

🍽️

Best Dining of Any Igloo Region

Levi's resort infrastructure means far better restaurant options than remote wilderness igloo areas. Restaurant Utsu at Golden Crown and Northern Lights Ranch's glass-walled restaurant are both destination dining in themselves.

🌐

Wide Area - Plan Your Drive

The Levi/Kittila region covers a large area. Some properties (Muonio, Kongas) are 40-60km from Levi village. Check the map carefully and budget extra drive time - roads are scenic but slow in winter conditions.

Levi Glass Igloo Questions

Yes - this is Levi's unique advantage. Levi ski resort has 43 slopes and is Finland's most popular ski resort. Glass igloo hotels are 5-20km from the slopes. The ski season (November to April) and aurora season (August to April) overlap almost entirely. In December and January, darkness falls before 2pm, giving you maximum aurora viewing hours after skiing.
Golden Crown Levin Iglut on Utsuvaara fell at 340m above sea level consistently delivers the best aurora conditions - elevated above valley light pollution with 270 degree sky views. Northern Lights Ranch is also excellent - located 15km from Levi in dark wilderness with sky view cabins and outdoor hot tubs. Both have aurora alarm services.
Kittila Airport (KTT) is 15km from Levi village - about 15 minutes by car. Most glass igloo hotels in the area are 15-40 minutes from the airport. Some more remote properties (Muonio, Kongas) are 40-60 minutes away. A rental car is essential - book at the airport.
It depends what you want. Levi wins for skiing, restaurant quality, airport proximity (KTT vs RVN) and variety of igloo locations including fell-top elevated properties. Rovaniemi wins for total number of igloo options, Santa Claus Village experience and more year-round flight connections. For a skiing holiday with aurora viewing: choose Levi. For a pure igloo and aurora experience: either works, Saariselka has the best aurora statistics.
Christmas week (December 20 to January 3) sells out 6-12 months ahead - book immediately if you want those dates. January and February book up 3-4 months ahead. The best value month is October - aurora season is active, ski season beginning, prices are 30-40% below January. March is also excellent - equinox aurora boost and ski season in full swing simultaneously.
Levi offers the most activity variety of any Finnish igloo region: skiing and snowboarding (43 slopes, 26 lifts), cross-country skiing (230km of trails), husky safaris, reindeer sleigh rides, snowmobile tours, ice fishing, aurora snowshoe walks, and snowcat tours. The ski resort infrastructure means activities are better organised and more available than in remote wilderness areas.
