Small Selection. Extraordinary Places.

Sweden is the underrated choice for glass igloo travellers. With only a handful of properties, each one has had to earn its place through genuine originality - you will not find cookie-cutter glass dome resorts here. Treehotel in Harads is regularly named one of the most extraordinary hotels in the world. The Abisko area has a scientifically documented microclimate that produces more clear nights than anywhere else in Scandinavia.

Swedish Lapland also combines extremely well with Finnish Lapland - Kiruna in Sweden and Rovaniemi in Finland are just a few hours apart by train or car. Many travellers split a week between the two countries, getting the unique Swedish experiences and the broader Finnish hotel selection in one trip.

The anchor of Swedish arctic tourism is Kiruna - a mining city above the Arctic Circle that has reinvented itself as one of Scandinavia's most interesting winter destinations. The famous ICEHOTEL in nearby Jukkasjarvi is built fresh from ice and snow every winter and has been running since 1989. Combining an ICEHOTEL night with a glass igloo stay nearby is a popular itinerary.

For pure aurora statistics, Abisko National Park 70km west of Kiruna is the destination. The Aurora Sky Station on Mount Nuolja runs cable car tours specifically for Northern Lights viewing - one of the most memorable aurora experiences available anywhere.

Why Abisko Has the Clearest Aurora Sky in Scandinavia

Lake Tornetrask creates a unique microclimate around Abisko National Park. Cold air from the lake rises and pushes clouds away, creating a persistent clearing in the sky directly above, even when the surrounding area is overcast. Scientists from the Swedish Institute of Space Physics have documented this effect over decades. In practical terms: Abisko has statistically more clear nights per aurora season than Tromso, Rovaniemi or any other popular aurora destination. The Aurora Sky Station at the top of Mount Nuolja exploits this with a cable car that lifts you above the treeline for unobstructed 360 degree sky views.

Sweden Glass Igloo Questions

Finland invented the glass igloo concept and had a 30-year head start in developing the market. Swedish Lapland has focused more on different accommodation concepts - the ICEHOTEL, Treehotel and wilderness lodges. The glass igloo market in Sweden is growing but remains small. This is actually an advantage for guests: less crowded, more exclusive, more original than the larger Finnish resort clusters.
Abisko National Park has a scientifically documented microclimate caused by Lake Tornetrask. The cold air rising from the lake pushes clouds away from the area, creating a persistent clearing in the sky. Statistically Abisko has more clear nights per aurora season than Tromso, Rovaniemi or any other popular destination. The Aurora Sky Station on Mount Nuolja exploits this with cable car access above the treeline for unobstructed 360 degree sky views.
Yes - and this is one of the most popular itineraries in Swedish Lapland. The ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjarvi is 17km from Kiruna town centre. Aurora Dome and Aurora Mountain Lodge are both accessible from Kiruna. A typical itinerary: 1 night ICEHOTEL art suite, 2 nights glass igloo - both within reach of Kiruna Airport. Book the ICEHOTEL well in advance as art suites sell out months ahead.
Abisko specifically has better aurora statistics than most Finnish locations due to its microclimate. However Finland has far more accommodation choice and generally better infrastructure for igloo stays. For aurora hunting specifically: Abisko wins. For overall igloo experience with more choice: Finland wins. The ideal solution is to visit both - they are only 3-4 hours apart.
Sweden has several activities not easily found elsewhere: the Aurora Sky Station cable car at Abisko, the Ofoten railway scenic train to Norway, Riksgransen extreme skiing on the Norwegian border, more integrated Sami cultural experiences, and of course the world-famous ICEHOTEL. Moose safaris are also a Swedish specialty - moose are far more common here than in Norway.
October to February is the main window. November and December are prime aurora months with complete polar night in the Kiruna area. March is excellent - aurora season continues but temperatures are slightly milder and there is more daylight for activities. September is possible but it is still quite light this far south compared to Finnish Lapland.
