Saariselka glass igloos are the most popular in Finland. Iconic Kakslauttanen Arctic resort is located 10km south from Saariselka. There are other worth visiting igloos at the same area: Northern Lights Village, Wilderness Hotel Muotka, Revontulikota.
Ivalo airport is 25-35 km from Saariselka igloo hotels.
Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort is where the glass igloo was born. In 1973, founder Aslak Lohi was caught in a snowstorm and spent the night in his car on this spot. He built a shelter, then an igloo, then more - and eventually created what became the most famous arctic accommodation concept in the world. Today the resort stretches across two villages in the wilderness of Saariselka, 241 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle and 40 minutes from Ivalo Airport.
With 214 individual units including glass igloos, Kelo-glass igloos, log chalets, snow igloos and suites, Kakslauttanen is the largest glass igloo resort on the planet. The East Village is the original site - smaller, quieter, with a historic atmosphere. The West Village, 4 km away, is more expansive and home to most signature activities including the world largest smoke sauna (capacity 100 people), the Cosmos planetarium (largest in Scandinavia), the resort brewery and distillery, and the husky farm.
Every glass igloo and Kelo-glass igloo has a thermal glass roof kept frost-free year-round by an electric heating element. The in-room aurora alarm wakes you the moment lights appear in the sky. Breakfasts and 3-course dinners are included in all igloo rates - the restaurant serves both Lappish specialties and a full Indian menu daily, a genuine rarity this far into the Arctic wilderness.
The surrounding nature is exceptional. Urho Kekkonen National Park begins directly at the resort boundary - one of the largest national parks in Europe, with trails for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Husky safaris, reindeer sleigh rides, snowmobile expeditions and ice fishing are all organised from the resort.
Northern Lights Village Saariselkä is one of the most complete glass igloo experiences in Finnish Lapland - and one of the most accessible price-wise. From €239/night in September rising to €500+ in peak winter, it sits noticeably below Kakslauttanen and Golden Crown for a comparable cabin experience. Summer rates drop to €139/night - no aurora, but a valid option for midnight sun visits. Founded in 2016 by aurora photographer Markku Inkilä, the resort spans 80 north-facing laser-heated glass-roof cabins plus the elevated Polar Sky Suites on Kaunispää fell. At 250 km north of the Arctic Circle you get genuine dark-sky conditions, a physical aurora buzzer alert in every cabin, and a depth of activities - guided aurora hunts, husky safari, snowmobiling, and the legendary Searching for Santa family experience - that few igloo resorts can match at this price point.
